As they say reading to your child everyday is the best way to help them acquire language skills. It also helps in many other ways including helping them learn a love of reading. For bubba boy though it just seemed like he was never going to get it. He’s a very active kidlet and never wants to sit down and read a book. Even as a baby I would try to read to him every night before bed. He would just lay in his bed and scream, so I gave up. The only time we really get some reading in is in the shower. We have three bath books, one about a car, one about a plane and one about a helicopter. These books he loves, he hill sit in my lap as the shower is running and listen to the words, point out the pictures and turn the pages (mostly only when asked
).
Recently however I have found another great site on the Internet to get him interested in reading and stories. Here it is. It’s a web-page with books read by actors. It’s produced by the screen actors guild foundation and has some lovely points. Each of the books is read by a different actor. You can choose the connection speed (so if you have ‘super Aussie’ net dont worry – they even have 56k dial up speed). They even have a list of related activities you can do with your child after you have read the story. So far these all seem to be for kidlets a little older than my bubba boy, but their ideas for older kids often give me ideas that I hadn’t thought of, so I still find them useful.
They have more than 20 stories atm, and they are adding more. There are comments from teachers and parents all over the world praising the site, the stories and the wonderful intonation and expression the actors put into reading the stories. I also love the fact that there is another English speaker talking to my bubba boy. Which wont mean anything to non-bilingual parents, but the same idea can apply, it’s a new voice and person for your son to listen to. It’s not just some guy on the street or some TV character, the actor is reading a story to your child one-2-one. Think of it as story time at the library. Take a look at it and you will see what I mean.
